In Mc Candless’s eyes, people in his society have forgotten about the value in the pursuit of personal knowledge, the chase of individual happiness, and the existence without materialistic objects.

On his journey, Mc Candless takes drastic measures to uncover, find and discover who he is and what he is capable of, isolating himself physically and mentally, driven by the idea that society urges men to conform.

In his backpack, he had “little more than a .22 caliber rifle and a 10-pound bag of rice” (Power, 1).

He was hoping to discover himself and test to make sure he could live in the Alaskan wilderness with little to nothing, but instead only found himself dead.

His actions, often considered to be selfish and cruel, might have been necessary and almost noble change for him.

By not even communicating with his sister, Carine, the one person to whom he was quite close to, Chris makes it quite obvious that he does not want to be found.

Mc Candless was always a unique and intelligent boy who saw the world differently.

Into the Wild explores all aspects of Mc Candless’s life in order to better understand the reason why a smart, social boy, from an upper class family would put himself in extraordinary peril by living off the land in the Alaskan Bush....
