Year 9 Textiles In Year 9 Textiles GCSE students begin by exploring the history of textiles and woven fabrics.Students undertake practical lessons in hand sewing, where students learn a range of hand stitches and incorporate these into a form of a ‘Stitch Book’; once mastered students then progress onto embroidery, here students are able to expand their sewing skills into a more developed outcome.

Projects change and develop regularly and are inspired by a range of themes and textile techniques.

Examples of previous projects include: transfer printed cushions, constructed fascinators, mini make up bags, fashion illustration task, printed boleros, sublimation reusable book bags, painted shoes, Project Catwalk inspired portfolios and upcycling a garment.

The personal investigation project allows students to independently research and study artists, an area of fashion or a theme or concept that interests them and produce reflective practical work based on this.

Trip have included The Knitting and Stitching Show and The Clothes Show.

Skills developed will include: Working to a set design brief, working independently and as a part of a team, responding to the ideas of others, to find imaginative solutions Critically reflect and evaluate the work of others and their own and be able to modify and develop their own ideas.

To be able to use a broad range of hand and machine techniques and processes (including, hand sewing, embroidery , appliqué, & embellishments Making links to other areas of the curriculum (including Math’s, English and Science) Practical Workshops: Hand stitches Hand embroidery Appliqué Embellishments Reverse appliqué –extension for higher students Suffolk puffs - If time at end of the 6 weeks: extension task They will become familiar with artists and their work.

Development throughout the course is recorded in portfolios as well as research undertake within their own textile design and learnt skills and techniques.
